Hauora
What is Hauora?
Hauora is a Māori philosophy of health unique to Aotearoa. It comprises:
Taha tinana (the physical dimension)
Physical wellbeing as well as the physical body, its growth, development, and ability to move, and ways of caring for it.
Taha hinengaro (the mental dimension)
Mental and emotional wellbeing including coherent thinking processes, acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings, and responding constructively.
Taha whānau (the family dimension)
Social wellbeing exploring family relationships, friendships, and other interpersonal relationships; feelings of belonging, compassion, and caring; and social support.
Taha wairua (the spiritual dimension)
Spiritual wellbeing and the values and beliefs that determine the way people live, the search for meaning and purpose in life, and personal identity and self-awareness. (For some individuals and communities, spiritual wellbeing is linked to a particular religion; for others, it is not.)
Each of these four dimensions of hauora influences and supports the others.

What We Do
The well-being trend in New Zealand has displayed concerning trends, showing a decline rather than an incline. As per the official Treasury Wellbeing report, our country experiences high rates of bullying among children and there has been a rapid increase in psychological distress among teenagers and young adults.
To counter these issues, Reconnect aspires to promote the well-being of Kiwis through series of Hauora events. In te reo Māori, “Hauora” means holistic well-being, encompassing four pillars: Physical, Mental, Spiritual and Social. We hope to rejuvenate the well-being of Kiwis through this framework.
In the year 2023, Reconnect has chosen to target the mental hauora of youth. Through a Mental Health Awareness competition, we will encourage young people across Aotearoa to actively promote mental hauora among their peers. A competition will be held where high school students can submit a self-care pack to promote the mental hauora. Selected entrants will be given opportunity to pitch their ideas with winners receiving a grand prize, as well as an opportunity to execute their winning proposal with the support of Reconnect.
Collaborating with mental health professionals, Reconnect will facilitate the deliverance of valuable knowledge to the youth, further enriching their understanding of mental hauora.
Reconnect aims to create a powerful movement driven by the youth that raises awareness about the importance of holistic well-beng and its impact on individuals and communities.
